Breakthrough ACTION has been a frontline actor throughout Senegal’s COVID-19 response, focusing on risk communication and community engagement and promoting vaccination. The project also works with the National Malaria Control Program to address malaria prevention efforts supported by the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, and through Global Health Security, it aims to address priority zoonotic diseases in regions identified as high-risk.

Collaborating with government ministries, the One Health Platform, and other partners, Breakthrough ACTION implements nationwide social and behavior change activities, including building and reinforcing rumor management systems and training key health, media, and government personnel. Thanks in part to Breakthrough ACTION’s training, Senegal’s risk communication and community engagement system has been able to swiftly respond to outbreaks that have occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic, such as avian influenza. Breakthrough ACTION conducted situation analyses on health behaviors such as malaria care-seeking and prevention and worked with the government of Senegal to develop national plans and strategies across the health areas it supports.
