According to the World Health Organization, Nigeria ranks first in Africa and sixth among the top 30 countries for number of tuberculosis (TB) cases. Prior to 2019, Nigeria also has one of the lowest TB case notification rates in the world.
Breakthrough ACTION worked with Nigeria’s National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme to launch the Check Am O! campaign. This campaign was Nigeria’s first national unified social and behavior change (SBC) campaign designed to increase demand for TB testing and treatment services. Within a year of the campaign’s start, TB case notification in Nigeria increased by 50%, despite hindrances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This case study describes the main SBC approaches used in this campaign and lists the factors that helped make Check Am O! a successful campaign.
