Adapting innovative techniques for SBC in FP/RH: Resources from Transform/PHARE

,

Written by Anne Stotler, Senior Associate, Breakthrough ACTION

The Transform/PHARE project developed innovative approaches to enhance health-related behavior change programming and family planning outcomes by adapting novel techniques from marketing, advertising, human-centered design, and behavioral economics. This five-year cooperative agreement was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and led by Population Services International in partnership with Camber CollectiveIDEO, and YLabs.

Transform/PHARE worked across four countries—Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Niger—and four thematic areas—audience segmentation, male engagement, provider behavior change, and cross-sectoral social and behavior change (SBC).

The video below illustrates a few of the innovative interventions that were developed as part of the project:

The innovative ideas, interventions, and research insights generated by Transform/PHARE are valuable resources for SBC stakeholders aiming to address barriers to modern contraceptive use, promote family planning, and transform attitudes about reproductive health.

A new Compass Spotlight, created to share these learnings with the broader SBC community, documents the project’s impact and lessons learned and helps implementers consider how these innovative approaches might be employed in other contexts. The Transform/PHARE Compass Spotlight shares resources related to the following topics:

  • Adapting innovative approaches from other fields
  • Audience segmentation
  • Engaging men and community influencers
  • Provider behavior change
  • Cross-sectoral social and behavior change

The materials shared for each of these topics are intended for host-country governments, implementing partners, service delivery organizations, donors, and other stakeholders. Many of these materials are available in both English and French.

We invite you to check out the new Transform/PHARE Compass Spotlight to explore these resources!
