Breakthrough ACTION implemented activities in 13 states in Nigeria: Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Ebonyi, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Nasarawa, Oyo, Kano, Zamfara, and the Federal Capital Territory. The project also supported states where there were disease outbreaks.
Working with government partners at the national and sub-national levels, Breakthrough ACTION expanded Nigeria’s capacity to initiate and sustain social and behavior change activities and coordinated across agencies, partners, and sectors while doing so. Breakthrough ACTION developed a coordinated package of interventions that strategically addressed the barriers that affect health behaviors. Each of these interventions was coordinated to reinforce messages.

Why we do this work
Breakthrough ACTION’s community provider dialogue approach strengthened community capacity and promoted behavior change among health care providers. A highlight of the approach was the collaboration among key stakeholders, such as community members, providers, and Ward Development Committees, to develop joint action plans that enhance community ownership of health initiatives. Fostering collaboration among stakeholders supported joint identification of structural and social barriers to accessing health services and the development of local solutions to addressing them.
