The Taxonomy for Social Norms that Influence Family Planning in East African Countries was developed by Breakthrough ACTION to help practitioners understand the family planning social norms landscape. The project carried out a literature review that identified relevant examples of family planning social norms in East African countries (Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda). The East Africa taxonomy includes five categories of norms and each category has multiple subcategories. This taxonomy can be used for both research and program development (along with other tools and approaches) for family planning interventions in the region.
